Applied Behavior Analysis: Strategies for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

A range of behavior analytic interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder has been established as evidence-based. These interventions vary in both the strategies used and the goals targeted, often leading to confusion and misunderstanding of applied behavior analysis (ABA). This workshop will provide an overview of evidence-based interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on applied behavior analysis as well as a description of how to incorporate these strategies into treatment planning for individuals with ASD.

Presented by
Melanie Pellecchia, Ph.D., M.S.Ed., Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research, University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine.

Helping Children and Teens Manage Anger

Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein

Poorly managed anger, especially in children and teens, is often destructive. It is crucial that we help children and teens effectively regulate their anger. By doing so, they will feel calmer, happier, be more confident to handle challenges, and have better connections with others. Proven strategies and tools from mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral, and relaxation therapies are provided to help children and teens identify anger signals and reactions in their minds and bodies and teach them how to truly calm themselves down.

Presented by
Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein a psychologist with over 28 years experience specializing in child, adolescent, couples, and family therapy. He completed his post-doctoral internship at the University of Pennsylvania Counseling Center and holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the State University of New York at Albany.

Update on Mandated Reporting of Child Abuse

Protecting children is the responsibility of us all. Anyone who suspects that a child is being hurt has the right to report that suspicion. But certain professionals, due to their contact or work with children, have special responsibilities. These people are called mandated reporters and are required by law to report suspected child abuse. Mandated reporters are of critical importance in the child abuse prevention effort. This training identifies the role and responsibility bystanders and care providers play in the prevention, protection and intervention of child abuse.

Presented by
Mandy Mundy, Senior Director of Programs and Services, has over 20 years of experience at Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA) in Bucks County.
