"Raising Cain" Author Dr. Dan Kindlon Offered His Views on the Emotional Life of Boys

Ron Bernstein, executive director of Foundations Community Partnership greets Dr. Dan Kindlon

Doylestown/Trevose, PA (May 5, 2008) - Over 150 educators, counselors, social workers, nurses, and mental health professionals attended Foundations Community Partnership's half-day conference featuring Harvard psychologist Dr. Dan Kindlon, author of the best-selling book, "Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys" on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Trevose Radisson Hotel in Trevose, PA.

Dr. Kindlon helped identify the social and emotional challenges that boys and men encounter. His humorous and informative presentation highlighted the destructive patterns for boys that inhibit their nurturing skills as adult men.

"The most aggressive kids in first, second and third grade often persist and show much more aggression by the seventh grade," Dr. Kindlon said. "Much of these negative behaviors are due to learning problems and we need to recognize these problems early on. Kids get mad when they fall behind and it becomes a real problem by middle school."

In his illuminating presentation, Dr. Kindlon explained how to identify the social and emotional challenges and pressures that boys and men encounter and recognize how destructive patterns in childhood contribute to inadequate nurturing skills in many adult men.

"Women have been trained to deal with strong emotions in ways boys and men haven't," said Dr. Kindlon. "Although it's normative for a lot of adolescent boys to show delinquent behaviors, it generally desists in young adulthood. We need to help boys and men cultivate emotional awareness and empathy, as a part of their masculinity."

"We were glad that Dr. Kindlon was able to help us explore the emotional life of boys and show how we can make positive changes in our schools and the Bucks County community, said Ron Bernstein, executive director, Foundations Community Partnership.
