“Raising Cain” Author Dr. Dan Kindlon to Speak on Gender Responsive Treatment Strategies

Doylestown/Trevose, PA (March 11, 2008) – Foundations Community Partnership, a non-profit operating foundation in Bucks County will sponsor a half-day conference, “Boys to Men: Enhancing Emotional Awareness and Nurturing Skills in Strength Based Treatment” on Friday, May 2, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Trevose Radisson Hotel in Trevose, PA. The conference features Harvard psychologist Dr. Dan Kindlon, author of the best-selling book, “Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys”.

Dr. Kindlon’s presentation will explore how boys and men can suffer from a narrow definition of proper behavior imposed on them early in life. These experiences leave anger, sadness, fear and silence in boys and inhibit emotional creativity in men. Increasing skills in nurturing and emotional literacy are some of the most valuable gifts we can offer. Dr. Kindlon will explain why boys need to be taught by example that emotional connection is the sturdiest bridge between boyhood and manhood, and that emotional courage is the truest test of a young man's character. Dr. Kindlon will also explore the concept that boys have as much aptitude as girls for the emotional skills they need to build and sustain friendships, to feel connected rather then cut off, to love and feel loved.

“Over the past several years, a rash of incidents where boys have inflicted violence on others – including children, teachers and their own parents - has heightened public awareness and sparked widespread discussion of “the boy problem” in schools and communities across the country,” said Ron Bernstein, executive director, Foundations Community Partnership. “We are excited to have Dr. Kindlon explore the emotional life of boys and how we can make positive changes in our schools and the community.”

“Schoolyard shootings and teen suicides, which focus our attention on only a tiny fraction of the boy population, are merely high-profile indications of deeper and more fundamental problems that place all our boys at risk,” said keynote speaker Dan Kindlon, Ph.D. “In my book and in my presentation, I shed light on the troubled inner world of boys in contemporary society and explore how our culture socializes boys to disregard their emotional lives and how this plays out in boys' relationship with their parents, their peers, their schools, and ultimately with themselves.”

Dr. Dan Kindlon is a clinical and research psychologist specializing in behavioral problems of children and adolescents. He teaches child psychology at Harvard University, where he has been a faculty member since 1985. Dr. Kindlon is the author of numerous scientific journal articles on topics including the importance of father involvement in child rearing, the physiological underpinnings of childhood impulsivity, and the effects on children of exposure to violence. He is the author of four books: the NY Times bestselling “Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys” (co-authored with Michael Thompson), “Too Much of a Good Thing: Raising Children of Character in an Indulgent Age”, “Tough Times, Strong Children: Lessons from the Past for Your Child’s Future”, and his newest book “Alpha Girls: Understanding the New American Girl and How She is Changing the World”.

This conference is designed for professionals and educators working with boys, men and their families. Continuing education credits will be offered for Nurses, Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Psychologists, NBCC Counselors, and Act 48 credits. The cost to attend the half-day seminar is $105 per person and includes continental breakfast, continuing education credits and all sessions.  For more information or to register, call Nancy DiNatale, Foundations Community Partnership at 267-247-5584.
