Foundations Announces 2010 Partnership in Education Award Winners

Students from Bensalem H.S.; Bristol H.S.; Central Bucks H.S. East; Central Bucks H.S. South; Central Bucks H.S. West; Council Rock North; Council Rock South; Harry S. Truman H.S.; Morrisville H.S.; Neshaminy H.S; New Hope-Solebury H.S.; Palisades H.S.; Pennridge H.S.; Pennsbury H.S.; Quakertown Community High School; William Tennent H.S.

Doylestown, PA (June, 2010) - Ronald Bernstein, Executive Director of Foundations Community Partnership has announced the students who are being awarded scholarships through the annual 2010 Partnership in Education program. The Foundations Partnership in Education program recognizes the achievements of local Bucks County public high school seniors for their demonstrated community service, commitment to academic performance, and quality of character. Students are nominated by their guidance counselor or a member of the school administration. 16 students were chosen to receive the award this year. Mr. Bernstein presented checks for $750 to:
  • Stormy Milburn at Bensalem High School - Stormy is a member of the National Honor Society, volunteers with a YWCA teen group and tutors first graders.
  • Joshua Plenski at Bristol High School - Josh volunteers with St. Ann's Short Shot basketball program and assists his neighbors and families with snow shoveling and babysitting.
  • David He at Central Bucks High School East - A national merit finalist and v.p. of both the Reading Olympics Club and Junior State of America, David is a certified EMT and volunteers with the Warrington Community Ambulance Corps.
  • Mira Amin at Central Bucks High School South - Mira is vice president of the National Honor Society and treasurer of the Key Club. She has logged 417 volunteer hours at Doylestown Hospital and volunteers at Neshaminy Manor, a local home for the elderly, Levittown Girls Youth Group and Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia.
  • Kierstyn Rose Gunn at Central Bucks High School West - An opera singer, Kierstyn has sung and done music therapy at Coatesville Veteran's Hospital, Lakeview Nursing Home and at other nursing homes throughout Bucks County.
  • Thomas Caputi at Council Rock High School North - Thomas has participated in many service-learning activities, including volunteer work at Churchville Nature Center, Ockanickon Scout Reservation, and Boy Scouts of America's Camp Ockanickon.
  • Jonathan Rosenbaum at Council Rock High School South - Jonathan has logged many volunteer hours over the years, working with the American Red Cross, Alex's Lemonade Stand, Liana's Legacy, and Locks of Love.
  • Thomas Germano, II of Harry S. Truman High School - Tom is currently CFO of the school's March of Dimes Project, is a member of the Key Club, volunteers at a local homeless shelter and has helped rebuild churches in Florida and South Dakota.
  • Zachary Markgraf at Morrisville High School - Zachary mentors an elementary school student with special needs, volunteers for the Visiting Nurses Association, and is the student representative for the Morrisville School Board.
  • Peter Jacoby at Neshaminy High School - Peter is Vice President of Sydney's Closet, which distributes used clothing to the homeless, collects money for Toys for Tots, volunteers for the American Cancer Society, tutors students, and has been shadowing a family practice physician.
  • Maria DeGiovanni at New Hope-Solebury High School - Maria is a Peer Leader at the school, where she runs groups, conducts tours, serves as a mentor and positive student ambassador.
  • Kelly Sleeman at Palisades High School - Kelly volunteers at Last Chance Ranch, helps out at her church and is involved with other volunteer activities through the school.
  • Zachariah Costa at Pennridge High School - Zach has volunteered with the State Conference that rewards teacher delegates with ACT 48 credit and students with leadership experience.
  • Dylan Principi at Pennsbury High School - A member of the National Honor Society, Dylan volunteers at Ockanickon Scout Reservation, Philadelphia Reads, The Bucks County Library, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Southampton Estates retirement home, and Lutheran Church of the Resurrection.
  • Jaclyn Miller at Quakertown Community High School - Jackie has volunteered her time at the Quakertown Food Pantry, LifeQuest Nursing Home, Alzheimer's Unit at Phoebe Nursing Home and organizes a "Senior Citizen Prom".
  • David Martin at William Tennent High School - David is a volunteer fireman and an Eagle Scout. He is also a student government advisor and hosts their fundraisers.
Many of the recipients of the Foundations Partnership in Education program are also being recognized as a part of their school's commencement activities or other ceremonies to honor outstanding students. They may use the monetary award for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes, including payment of their college tuition and related expenses.

"We are delighted to see how these young people are developing meaningful and positive roles in our community," says Bernstein. "They are to be congratulated for their efforts and encouraged in their future undertakings."

In addition to the Partnership in Education program, Foundations will again sponsor its annual Partnership in Youth Services program, to assist the endeavors of non-profit agencies serving children and adolescents in Greater Central Bucks County. The application forms for the Partnership in Youth Services program are mailed out in the fall.
