Foundations Announces 2009 Partnership in Education Award Winners

Students from Bensalem H.S.; Bristol H.S.; Central Bucks H.S. East; Central Bucks H.S. South; Central Bucks H.S. West; Council Rock North; Council Rock South; Harry S. Truman H.S.; Morrisville Middle Senior H.S.; Neshaminy H.S; New Hope-Solebury H.S.; Neshaminy High School; Palisades H.S.; Pennridge H.S.; Pennsbury H.S.; Quakertown Senior High School; William Tennent H.S.

Doylestown, PA (June, 2009) - Ronald Bernstein, Executive Director of Foundations Community Partnership has announced the winners of the annual 2009 Partnership in Education program. The Foundations Partnership in Education program recognizes the achievements of local Bucks County public high school seniors for their demonstrated community service, commitment to academic performance, and quality of character. Students are nominated by their guidance counselor or a member of the school administration. 16 students were chosen to receive the award this year.   • Daphne Lam at Bensalem High School - volunteers as a teacher's assistant in English as a Second Language classes and helped plan an "Adopt a Child" program. She also tutors students at the local YMCA and is a member of Future Business Leaders of America.
  • Ailsa Coughlan at Bristol High School - volunteered for Shop with a Cop and the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser. She is also a member of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee and is actively involved in the community.
  • Melanie Frank of Central Bucks High School East - volunteers for Doylestown Hospital and the Special Olympics. She also helps out at her church nursery school and also serves as a church youth leader.
  • Kevin Bockman of Central Bucks High School South - is active in many community service events, including Mission Trips to West Virginia and Virginia where he helped repair damaged homes and build houses for Habitat for Humanity. He also volunteers at the local soup kitchen and has helped build houses locally for Habitat for Humanity.
  • Mallory Pie at Central Bucks High School West - has been involved in 4-H for the past 4 years and has been raising Seeing Eye Dogs. She volunteered for Operation Christmas Child and participated in Relay for Life.
  • Brandon Schaeffer of Council Rock High School North - has logged over 482 hours of community service at Langhorne Manor Gardens, Lenape Valley Foundation and Holy Redeemer Thrift Store.
  • Shannon Michael of Council Rock High School South - has earned over 500 hours of community service, much of which was spent at Temple University Hospital in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
  • Melissa Arnold of Harry S. Truman High School - is a member of the Key Club and has participated in blood drives, worked with nursing home patients and volunteered at St. Christopher's Hospital in the child life department. She is also a SADD Counselor at Camp Hidden Falls, a camp for disabled students.
  • Cristina Santos of Morrisville Middle-Senior High School - volunteers at Temple Cristiano Jehora Jireh Church, tutors students in math and English, and volunteers with the 21st Century Interact Club.
  • Jacqueline E. Matzke of Neshaminy High School - her community service activities include volunteering at a work camp program to repair homes and volunteering for Ministry Week. She also participates in the 30 Hour Famine, where she fasts for 30 hours to raise money for food and other supplies.
  • Logan Cawley of New Hope-Solebury High School - participates in Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout and is President of the National Honor Society. He is also Chief Squire for the Squires of Columbus, Vice President of Student Government and is involved in the Rotary Club as a junior Rotarian.
  • Ashley Muth of Palisades High School - is involved in a variety of community service projects, including church activities, various events, pre-school Sunday School and summer camp counselor.
  • Kelsey Detweiler of Pennridge High School - participates in Adopt-A-Highway, church fundraising and Executive Council. She also serves as a mentor to elementary students and as a student ambassador.
  • Jonah Lustig of Pennsbury High School - served as a buddy/mentor through Friendship Circle, where he volunteered to make home visits to children with special needs and help organize and implement a dorm renovation at the Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf. He has also helped raise funds for Darfur relief and the American Red Cross.
  • Amanda Kinnon of Quakertown Community Senior High School - volunteers for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, a Woman's Place and Student Government Service/Fundraisers.
  • Pavan Kottamasu at William Tennent High School - has volunteered countless hours to the Centennial School District Elementary Summer Academy. He tutored in a remedial reading program and created the database for the teachers.
Many of the recipients of the Foundations Partnership in Education program are also being recognized as a part of their school's commencement activities or other ceremonies to honor outstanding students. They may use the monetary award for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes, including payment of their college tuition and related expenses. "We were delighted to see how these young people are developing meaningful and positive roles in our community," says Bernstein. "They are to be congratulated for their efforts and encouraged in their future undertakings."

In addition to the Partnership in Education program, Foundations will again sponsor its annual Partnership in Youth Services program, to assist the endeavors of non-profit agencies serving children and adolescents in Greater Central Bucks County. The application forms for the Partnership in Youth Services program are mailed out in the fall.
