Foundations Presents Professional Workshops on School Violence and Defiant Behavior
Doylestown, PA (Jan. 22, 2008) – Foundations Community Partnership, a community service organization supporting the behavioral health and human service needs of children and young adults in Bucks County has announced its upcoming professional workshops for mental health professionals and educators on “ Assessing Youth at Risk for School Violence” and “Effective Interventions For Defiant Behavior in Children & Adolescents.”
On Wednesday, March 5, 2008, p resenter Peter Langman, Ph.D., Director of Psychology at KidsPeace will explain how to identify threat assessment of adolescents at risk for committing school violence. Drawing on data compiled by the FBI, Secret Service and other researchers, as well as his own experience in assessing homicidal youths, Dr. Langman will review risk factors associated with school-related shootings and suicidal behavior. Areas of risk assessment include the student, the student's family, the school environment and other social influences. During his timely presentation, Dr. Langman will identify the types of school shooters, show how to recognize the warning signs of potential school shootings and describe the process of threat assessments.
A well-regarded speaker, Dr. Langman has presented at the American Psychological Association, Pennsylvania Psychological Association, and the Academy of Psychologists Engaged in Private Practice. The author of numerous professional publications, Dr. Langman has also served as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department, Psy.D. Program at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
On Wednesday, April 2, 2008, Jeffrey Bernstein, Ph.D. will give a clinical presentation based on his book “10 Days to a Less Defiant Child”. Dr. Bernstein will distinguish the causes of defiant behavior in children and teens review the diagnostic criteria of oppositional defiant disorder and provide the keys to effectively reducing defiance in children and teens at home and school. Dr. Bernstein will also discuss how to work with families to bring about positive change and how to overcome stubborn obstacles in overcoming defiance with other emotional issues such as ADHD, depression, and anxiety. Participants will learn how to significantly reduce parent-child conflict and teacher-student conflict, identify co-existing conditions that fuel defiant behavior and strategize how to manage them and understand the most effective use of consequences for defiant behavior and the optimal use of positive reinforcement to promote more compliant behavior.
A well known relationship expert and the author of “ Why Can't You Read My Mind?” Dr. Bernstein lends his expertise on a variety of issues including: child development, family concerns, self-esteem, ADHD, learning disabilities, discipline, toxic thinking in intimate relationships, and most recently, difficult children and other parenting issues.
“We’re pleased to present these timely and important workshops featuring leaders in the field of child and adolescent behavioral health,” says Ronald Bernstein, Executive Director, Foundations Community Partnership. “We encourage educators and mental health professionals to register and obtain continuing education credits.”
All workshops are held from 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Doylestown Hospital Wellness Center Auditorium, 847 Easton Rd./Rt. 611, Warrington, PA ( at the intersection of Route 611 and Shetland Rd. approx. 4 miles north of the Willow Grove/Doylestown exit of the PA Turnpike.) Refreshments will be served. There is a $35 fee to attend each program. Continuing education credits will be offered for Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Psychologists, NBCC Counselors, and Act 48 credits.
