Foundations Fall Workshops Will Cover Adolescent Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Doylestown, PA (October 6, 2009) -- Foundations Community Partnership (www.fcpartnership.org), a private non-profit operating foundation benefiting youth in Bucks County invites educators, counselors, parents, and mental health professionals to attend their fall workshops.

"Child and Adolescent Anxiety: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Intervention Strategies" will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2009, 8:30 a.m. - noon. This workshop will provide an overview of the nature, symptoms, and experience of anxiety in youth. Presenter Philip C. Kendall, Ph.D., ABPP will discuss when anxiety is developmentally reasonable and when it is disordered. Signals (red flags) that anxiety is a key problem will be discussed. The workshop will address specific intervention strategies that comprise Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Research outcomes will also be used to illustrate both what we know and what we do not yet know about the treatment of anxiety disorders in youth. Time permitting, samples from the new computer-assisted program, Camp Cope-A-Lot will be previewed.

Dr. Kendall is director, Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic, Temple University, author of over 400 publications, and recipient of over 20 years of uninterrupted grant support from various agencies. He is ranked 5th in faculty members teaching in the 157 APA-approved programs in clinical psychology. Dr. Kendall has received many prestigious awards including the Inaugural Research Recognition Award from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America and Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences.

"Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Psychiatric Responses to Trauma and Disaster" will be held on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, 8:30 a.m. - noon. In 2008, over 211 million people worldwide were affected by disasters. Managing the psychological response to trauma will determine how a person, a family or a community recovers. We expect resilience, but when an event overwhelms an individual's or a town's resources, we can expect some normal reactions to such stress, and create interventions that promote recovery for not only the resilient, but also for those experiencing high levels of distress and impairment. From campus shootings, the attack on the world trade center, and Hurricane Katrina to flu pandemics and military deployment, almost everyone is affected in some way by disaster. This enlightening workshop will cover psychosocial responses to trauma, disaster and psychological first aid.

Presenter Patcho Santiago, M.D., MPH is an active duty Navy psychiatrist who is currently an Assistant Professor at the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Prior to joining the faculty at USUHS, Santiago was stationed at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, California as a staff psychiatrist and assistant department head of Mental Health Services, serving active duty marines and sailors, as well as their family members. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005-06 with the Expeditionary Medical Facility Kuwait, where he led the Combat/Operational Stress Team.

Both workshops will be held at the Health & Wellness Center Auditorium, 847 Easton Rd./Rt. 611, Warrington, PA 18976. Cost is $45 for each workshop. Continuing education credits will be offered for PA Social Workers & Licensed Professional Counselors, Psychologists, NBCC Counselors, PA Nurses and Act 48 credits.
